In deze buurt, het oudste deel van Knokke (in een voormalig duingebied), geven huiseigenaren hun woning graag een naam. De naam van dit huis is "Rag Doll". Een rag doll of lappenpop is een gevulde pop, traditioneel gemaakt van verschillende onsamenhangende stukken materiaal, die een samenhangend geheel vormen. Dit huis is net dat.

Huis of boerderij, in de stad of op het platteland, renovatie of nieuwbouw, cottage of hedendaags, deze architect of die architect? Voor deze opdrachtgevers was het niet alleen moeilijk om een geschikt gebouw of terrein te vinden, maar ook om de geschikte architecten te vinden. Alles lag op de tafel. Deze dualiteit en twijfel van de klant werd de kern van het ontwerpproces. In plaats van te kiezen, werden opties gecombineerd. Het wordt een fascinerende lappenpop.

Het project is onverwacht rationeel. Het bestaande huis, daterend uit 1928, is geregistreerd dus slopen was geen optie. Toch wilde de opdrachtgever absoluut een grote kelder. Door de bouw van deze kelder moest het hele gebouw geschoord worden, op een gegeven moment zwevend in de lucht op micropalen. Dit vormde de perfecte basis voor het ontwerp: Het hele huis werd onder het dak doorgesneden. De bovenkant van het huis bleef een cottage (met alle bijhorende details) terwijl het gelijkvloers een minimalistisch glazen huis werd.

De radicale openheid van het gelijkvloers verbetert de oriëntatie van de woning (de zon komt nu de hele dag binnen) en intensiveert de relatie met de omliggende tuin. Het cirkelvormige terras (in zandsteenachtige natuursteen) dat het hele huis omringt, alsook de gigantische schuiframen benadrukken deze extreme binnen-buitenrelatie.

De glazen sokkel stelt zich ondergeschikt aan de bovenliggende cottage waarvan het dak ruim boven het geheel uittorent, maar er is een duidelijke wisselwerking tussen oud en nieuw. Het huis veranderd niet vanuit de omgeving. Het is slechts eenmaal binnen dat de drastische verandering zichtbaar wordt. Het is eigenlijk een mooi contrast. Een goede uitdrukking van dualiteit die we vonden in de opdrachtgevers. En zij krijgen: de stad en het platteland, renovatie en nieuwbouw, cottage en minimalisme, deze architect en die architect.

In this neighbourhood, the oldest part of Knokke (in a former dune area), homeowners like to give their home a name. The name of this house is "Rag Doll". A rag doll is a stuffed doll, traditionally made of different incoherent pieces of material forming a coherent ensemble. This house is just that.

House or farm, in the city or in the countryside, renovation or new construction, cottage or contemporary, this architect or that architect? It was difficult for these clients, not only to find a suitable building or site, but also to find the suitable architects. Everything was on the table. This duality and doubt of the client became the core of the design process. Instead of choosing, options were combined. It will be a fascinating rag doll.

The project is unexpectedly rational. The existing house, dating from 1928, is registered so demolition was not an option.Nevertheless, the client absolutely wanted a large basement. The construction of this basement meant that the whole house had to be braced, at a certain point floating in the air on micro poles. This formed the perfect basis for the design: The whole house was cut in half. The top of the house remained a cottage (with all the details that go with it) while the ground floor became a minimalist glass house.

The radical openness of the ground floor improves the orientation of the house (the sun now comes in all day long) and intensifies the relationship with the surrounding garden. The circular terrace (in sandstone-like natural stone) that surrounds the entire house, as well as the giant sliding windows emphasize this extreme indoor-outdoor relationship.

The glass pedestal is subordinate to the cottage above, whose roof towers well above the whole, but there is a clear interaction between old and new. The house does not change from the environment. It is only once inside that the drastic change becomes visible. It's actually a nice contrast. A striking expression of the duality that we found in the clients. And they get: the city and the countryside, renovation and new construction, cottage and minimalism, this architect and that architect.
