Woning Rodetoren

2013

Private

The modest corner house, dating from the 19th century, is situated in the center of Ghent overlooking the historic merging of the rivers Schelde and Leie. On every floor the house has a unique view on this Portus Ganda.

Vertical extensions of the roof form a contemporary expression in contrast to the neo-classicistic white stucco cornice. The shape of these dormers is the result of extending the existing façade structure. The dimensions of the windows in the façade beneath were transferred in the roof volume in which the left window was extended up to the roof-ridge, as a vertical element on top of the vertical house: as a beacon. These roof extensions get their inspiration from the verticality, which is clearly present in the environment.

Because of the fine views , the kitchen, dining room and living room are located on the second and third floor; while the bedrooms are on the ground floor and the first floor. This ensures a lot of privacy in the living areas and accordingly the windows don’t need to be blinded.

The optimal use of the minimal surface of the house was created without compromising in openness and lightness. Every corner of the house is used, like on boats, every cm² is utilized.

All materials that are used are consciously and thoughtfully chosen with an emphasis on sustainable, honest, natural and ecological properties. For example, recycled wood from old piers is used for the floors and the dining room. This as a reference to the location (port) of the house, but also to obtain a desired brutal completion.

To enlarge the spatial feeling in this tiny house, everything inside is executed in white. The walls, the ceilings, the stairs. Nevertheless -with wooden beams of the ceiling visible, by renovating the old spiral staircase, carefully selecting warm illumination and by using natural materials throughout- the house feels cozy and warm; although everything is completely white.

The challenge was to utilize the minimal available space in this small house to a maximum, the project thus tries to optimize the living potential in this specific compact place.
